Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment that transforms the appearance of chipped, cracked, gapped or stained teeth. Dental veneers – tooth-coloured, ultra-thin shells that are attached to the front of teeth – can last up to 15 years with proper care.
But on rare occasions veneers may come off. If this happens with your veneers, what should you do? You can find out here. We’ll also investigate why veneers may fall off and find out how you can prevent the problem.
Imagine this: You bought an apple as a snack, you bite into the apple trying to savour it’s flavour when you suddenly you realise your veneers has fallen off !
In this article, we explain the why veneers may fall out, how to proceed and prevention of veneers falling off !
Why do dental veneers fall off?
It’s unusual for veneers to come off but it can occasionally happen. Veneers are secured to teeth with a strong dental bonding adhesive. In most cases, they remain firmly in place.
If veneers do fall off, it’s usually the result of :
Damaged Veneers
One of the main reasons veneers might fall off is damage from frequently eating hard or sticky foods or sweets. Chomping on ice is another cause of dislodged veneers.
Clenching or Grinding Your Teeth
Veneers can also be damaged by continuously clenching or grinding your teeth. This condition is known as bruxism, and the constant pressure can prise veneers loose and cause them to fall off.
Old Veneers
Veneers may fall off if they’re old and need to be replaced. The bonding agent may weaken over time, causing a veneer to slowly become detached from the tooth. And the natural ageing process can result in jaw bone deterioration, which can affect the fit of veneers.
Tooth Decay
Decay can result in a veneer falling off as well as damage to the tooth itself. Tooth decay may weaken the chemical bond that holds the veneer in place.
Forceful Contact
Physical trauma such as a hard blow to the face can dislodge veneers as well as knock out teeth.
Poor Dental Work
In some cases, responsibility for veneers coming off may lie with the dentist who applied the veneers. Veneers are held in place with dental glue or cement after a small area of dental enamel is trimmed from the tooth surface. If your dentist failed to prepare your teeth properly or used the wrong bonding technique, veneers can work loose and come off.
What to do when a veneer falls off?
If a veneer falls off, your first instinct may be to panic, mistakenly thinking a tooth has fallen out. However, there’s no reason to be unduly alarmed. A veneer that’s fallen off is not a dental emergency. There’s no immediate or serious threat to your tooth. Nevertheless, you’ll need a dentist to repair or replace the veneer – attempting to do so yourself is likely to make matters worse by damaging the veneer and/or the tooth.
Here are the steps that need to be taken if a veneer falls out:
Step 1
Keep the detached veneer in a clean, solid container. Your dentist may be able to put it back in place.
Step 2
Call your dentist as soon as possible. While making your appointment, your dentist can advise you over the phone on how to keep your tooth safe.
Step 3
Be careful when eating or drinking ahead of your dental appointment. The tooth is likely to be more sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks.
Step 4
Use dental wax if needed. Discomfort from tooth sensitivity or exposed rough enamel can be eased by applying a thin layer of dental wax onto the surface of your tooth.
Step 5
At your dental visit, your dentist will ensure there are no bits of veneer left in your mouth before determining why the veneer fell off. An underlying issue such as tooth decay will need to be addressed first.
Step 6
Your dentist will repair or replace your veneer. If the veneer hasn’t been damaged, the dentist may be able to reattach it after a thorough cleaning. If your veneer has chipped or cracked, your dentist will fit a new one. This entails removing adhesive residue from the tooth, taking an impression, and, when the new veneer has been made, fitting it to your tooth.

Taking care of veneers
You can take a few measures to help ensure your veneers remain in place :
- A good routine of brushing and flossing is essential for your oral health and to prevent veneers from falling off due to tooth decay. And limiting hard or sticky foods will lessen the risk of damage to veneers.
- Wearing a mouthguard during any type of contact sport will minimise the risk of damage to your veneers and to your teeth.
- A night guard can protect your teeth and your veneers if you tend to grind your teeth in your sleep.
Porcelain veneers
While the risk of porcelain veneers coming off is minimal, they provide many aesthetic benefits.
Veneers are a flexible cosmetic dentistry treatment that can:
- Conceal dental imperfections such as stains, chips and cracks.
- Reshape and resize teeth.
- Make teeth appear straighter.
- Fix minor teeth crowding.
- Close gaps between teeth.
Porcelain veneers look natural and resist staining, while helping to protect underlying tooth structure.
Finding the right dentist for your porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers typically stay securely attached to teeth, maintaining your perfect smile for many years, even a lifetime.
This is largely thanks to extremely strong bonding agents produced as a result of innovative technology. However, it’s still important to look after your veneers properly. It’s crucial your veneers are placed correctly in the first place.

The advanced technology of Invisalign aligners has made them a hugely popular alternative to braces for straightening teeth, among teens and adults alike.
These clear plastic appliances are more comfortable and virtually unnoticeable in the mouth, and have the further advantage of removability for brushing and flossing and meals and snacks. And they can fix less complex orthodontic problems up to twice as fast as braces.

Retainers sit inside of your mouth and come into direct contact with your teeth. Bacteria, plaque and tartar can quickly accumulate inside of your retainers if they’re not cleaned properly and regularly. Just like your regular teeth, it’s important to clean your retainers everyday.
ClearCorrect vs Invisalign
In this article, we compare two popular clear aligner companies: Invisalign and ClearCorrect. They are two of the most renown in-office clear aligner companies that boast a strong track record of results. Both sets of aligners aim to straighten misaligned teeth and correct jaw discrepancies, however, the process to getting to an ideal end result (i.e., straight teeth and aligned jaws) varies slightly.
