Why Are Dental Implants So Popular?

Prevents Bone Loss By Fusing With Jaw Bone

Regular dentures and bridges can lead to jaw bone weakening. If your jaw is no longer supporting a tooth, the bone deteriorates because it lacks the stimulation it needs from the tooth root – in the same way that muscles atrophy without use.

Implants are unique in dentistry because they replace the root of a missing tooth with an artificial root that fuses with jaw bone – the only tooth replacement option to promote bone growth.

This gives you a fully-functional permanent solution to tooth loss with the major benefit of preserving facial structure

Other reasons dental implants are so popular include:

dental implant convenience and confidence

Convenience

Dental implants look, feel, fit and function just like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.

Durability
Some tooth replacement treatments (dentures or conventional dental bridges) may need to be replaced after five to ten years but implants are designed to last several decades with proper care.

Are There Different Types of Dental Implants?

As an artificial tooth root, an implant comprises three parts. A titanium screw is surgically inserted into the jaw and a connector is attached to hold an artificial tooth.

From this basic structure, many treatment options can be derived through the use of implants, which been developed to fulfil different dental functions, such as:

Implant For Fixed Bridge

Unlike traditional bridgework, bridges anchored by implants don’t rely on adjacent teeth for support.

mini dental implants

Mini & Micro Implants

As the name suggests, mini implants are smaller than standard implants. They consist of a one-piece screw, with a ball-shaped end that protrudes from the jaw bone.

Micro implants are even smaller than mini implants, micro implants are used for particularly small gaps between teeth.

Will Dental Implants Be Right For Me?

If you’re basically healthy with a fully-developed jaw, dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or all your teeth. They can be used to support a crown, a full set of dentures or a dental bridge.

However, you’ll have to commit to a high standard of oral hygiene to look after your implanted teeth and surrounding gums. Regular brushing and flossing are essential, and so are regular check-ups and professional cleanings.

To determine whether dental implants are right for you, your dentist will carry out a thorough assessment of your mouth and jaw, including X-rays or digital scans.

Your dentist will also look at your medical history. The condition of your overall health affects how well an implant will fuse to bone and how your mouth will heal.

Implants may not be right for you if you have a severe medical problem such as:

Depending on the extent and severity of your medical condition, your implant dentist may be able to work with you and your physician to improve your overall health ahead of implant treatment.

Do Dental Implants Have a High Success Rate?

The skill, qualifications and experience of the dental surgeon play a major role in the success of dental implants.

The average success rate of dental implants in Singapore is over 95 percent. The higher success rates are achieved with expert treatment planning and identifying potential risks early.

Research shows the success rate of implants by inexperienced dentists to be just 73 percent, compared with 95.5 percent for dentists with advanced training in dental implant surgery.

In the right hands and with proper care and maintenance, your dental implants can last a lifetime.

You can help to ensure the ongoing functionality of your implants by:

  • Eating healthily.
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene.
  • Getting regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
  • Avoiding smoking.
